Arlington Cemetery, Washington DC
A picture today from Arlington Cemetery in Washington DC, which is simultaneously one of the most beautiful and moving places I’ve ever been to. Apparently 32,000 victims of war are buried here, which just defies belief. And, even though it treads a fine line on the periphery (gift shop in a cemetery, anyone?), once you get inside it’s just amazing. And when I visited, the weather was just perfect, with bright red and yellow colours on the trees, the slanting autumn sunlight and lines and rows of graves everywhere. I can’t do the scale or the beauty of it justice – you should just go there.

the important thing to remember about Arlington is that it doesn’t just serve the war dead—everyone who served in the US military can be buried there (with spouses, too. But due to space limitations, there rules regarding ground burial vs inurnment ). It’s a fascinating place.
