Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire

arbershop (600 x 402)

There’s a (partially) abandoned US air force base out by Upper Heyford, which it’s quite easy to get into and have a look around. The disused petrol station is ace, a real slice of run-down middle America in Oxfordshire (more of which later), but there’s also a wasteland car park with a series of closed shops at one side, including a supermarket, beauty salon and this barber’s. You can see the car park in the reflection of the window, through the streaks of dirt. I like the bit at the top where someone has been rubbing away at the tinted glass to try to get a look at the remnants of the shop.

My only experiences of Upper Heyford are:

    1) cycling past it on cold summer mornings at 7:30 am when I was working in Brackley for 6 weeks

    2) my wife reporting how the car was scratched by a coward who didn’t want to own up to it in the car park there while she attended a course one day

    3) briefly considering a track day there

I believe it now plays host to regular weekend karting races too.
