Lamp and temple, Kathmandu
What I was most struck by initially when I got out into Kathmandu is the visual chaos of the place – so much of it is ramshackle and all over the place, with pavements, wiring, houses (and therefore light and shadow) appearing totally haphazard. So I found it really tough going taking photos for the first couple of hours, as my eyes adjusting to trying to make sense of the visual chaos, and start finding patterns and lines that made sense and would hold a shot together. This is one of the shots I’m most pleased with from a composition point of view (if not in terms of colour and light), with the temple and the lamp matching each other nicely. It was the first proper runout for my 55-200mm zoom lens, too.
